Students visit London

Earlier this month some of our key stage four students went on an adventure to the Tower of London. After meeting at 7am at Blackburn train station, both staff and students set off to London via Preston. Once there, they took the tube across London to explore the Tower of London. The highlight was definitely seeing the crown jewels! Everyone had an amazing day and so many of our students now want to return to London and explore more!

Coffee shop visit

Our key stage four students visited 1617 Coffee House in Darwen to gain evidence for their qualification about handling money. Prior to the visit, students had to read through the menu, choose a drink and work out how much it would cost. On the day, each student then took turns to order a drink and pay for it and collect any change that was due. Everyone enjoyed their visit and drinks! Thank you 1617 Coffee House for such a welcoming visit.

Networking at inclusion event

Our SEND and Post 16 teams attended the Blackburn with Darwen SEND inclusion event at the Grand Centre in Blackburn. This was a great networking opportunity for the school and a chance to meet prospective parents and tell them all about our school. Thanks to everyone who popped by our stand and said hello.

Students set up market stall

Post 16 students have been very busy researching and creating products for their Spring market stall at Blackburn Market on the morning of Friday 28 March. They have been showing off their creativity skills and have listened to instructions very well to make some beautiful products, including Eid cards, Easter decorations and some treats for the birds in your garden. Make sure you head down to Blackburn Market next Friday to show your support, the students would love to see you.

Students meet baby William

You may have seen a few weeks ago that students from Post 16 had a visit from Mrs Crowther’s sister, Hannah. She came to visit to tell them all about her pregnancy as part of their PSHE topic. Yesterday, she visited again – but this time she was not alone! Students were thrilled to meet baby William and hear all about who looked after them in the hospital and what life is like with a newborn. They asked some lovely, thoughtful questions and had a look at all the items in her nappy bag to make sure she had everything…

Students set to work

Some of our post 16 students went on work experience this week to Mad Hatters Cafe. They listened carefully to safety information and learnt about the different roles in a cafe and then set to work. They cleaned tables, wrapped cutlery, greeted customers and took orders. They also carried cups to the tables and stamped loyalty cards. They were incredible and we were very proud of them for using their initiative, being very confident and having impeccable manners. Well done everyone!

Students set up food bank

As part of their work towards the Achieve Programme with The King’s Trust, Post 16 students at Crosshill Special School have explored different ways in which they can help others. As a class they have then voted how they would like to do this. They have decided that a food bank is a good idea as there are lots of people currently struggling with rising food costs. Working in partnership with Benefit Mankind, the UK based aid relief charity, the students will be collecting food and then packing food parcels to distribute to those in need. Special visitor comes to Post 16

In PSHE (personal, social and health education), Post 16 students have been learning about pregnancy as part of their ASDAN ‘Towards Independence’ accreditation. They had a special visitor yesterday – Mrs Crowther’s sister, Hannah. Hannah is due to have her baby any day now and came in to answer some fantastic questions from students. They learnt all about how she has been feeling, how she has been staying healthy and looked at some of her ultrasound photos. Students were eager to give Hannah some name suggestions for the baby too and had a go on her birthing ball. Thank you…

Duke of Edinburgh expedition

Our post 16 students had a fantastic time on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition. The weather was on their side as they went geocaching around Wayoh Reservoir, using directions and clues from the map to find the hidden treasure. After map reading, games and dinner at Height Nook, it was time for bed for our tired students (and staff!). In the morning, they travelled to Canal Side to get the canoes ready. Students had learnt how to do this in their previous sessions, so it was time to put this into practice independently. Students paddled from Feniscowles back to Canal…
